INTRODUCTION
It is important for health care professionals to provide equal and high quality health care services to people. There are some vulnerable people who are threatened to some natural hazard or resist to it. The people within society are vulnerable from certain things that are social, economic, (Bolin & Kurtz, 2018)
This report will discuss concept of vulnerability. It will describe about vulnerable group and on basis of social, physical or psychological factors. moreover, it will be explained about theory or strategies to support vulnerable person (Ribot, 2017).
Vulnerability as concept-
Vulnerability derived from the Latin verb ‘vulnerare’. The person is either exposed to being attacked or harmed, either physically or emotionally (Lee, 2019).. Vulnerability refers to a degree or extent to which a particular group resists cope up with or anticipate impact of natural or man mad hazard. The concept of vulnerability is dynamic which means it changes with hazard. Usually, vulnerability occurs in a social group, gender, disease and any other factors (Fu, Hardy & Duff, 2018). It is necessary to identify vulnerable people so that impact can be reduced. The group or individual who is considered vulnerable is due to lack of social support, health care services and many more. Generally, in order to specify people vulnerability there are two things to be defined. First is what threat or hazard are people vulnerable and other is what makes them vulnerable. Moreover, it is evaluated that there are many factors through which vulnerability is defined. They are social and economic. On basis of it, the extent to resist or coping up is defined as well (Shamet & et.al., (2019). .
Types of vulnerability
Physical – this type of vulnerability refers to physical impact of environment. It is determined by population, housing, remote area. the vulnerability is expressed as element at risk.
Economic – the hazard that can impact on economic asset such as property, job, etc. it occurs due to scarcity of resources or impact of natural disaster.
Social – it refers to inability of people, society, etc. to stand with adverse impact to hazard. This is because of difference in characteristics of social interaction, cultural values, (Dzingirai & et.al., 2017)
Environmental- this type of vulnerability is caused due to natural disaster or environment impact.
In order to reduce vulnerability health care professional, play a vital role. They provide high and effective care services to them. Moreover, by identifying the needs of people, care providers highly support them in fulfilling it. Alongside, they safeguard rights of people and understand their needs. Furthermore, staff support vulnerable people. they provide emotional, social, etc. support to them which results in reducing vulnerability. Besides that, following practices of health and social care vulnerability is reduced (Liu & Pratt, 2017). There are different care facilities that can be given to vulnerable people. it depends on type of vulnerability and needs of patients. However, most of time social support is given people.
From the placement experience a vulnerable group was identified that were a migrant who were living in UK. The person was vulnerable because of social factor. It describes the people who are different from society. They are distinguished on basis of characteristics and cultural values (Blandford & et.al., 2016).
In UK there are many migrants who are living. It can be analysed in UK since 2012 to 2018 there is high rise in number of migrants. Basically, migrants are coming from Arabic countries and other EU states (LIU & et.al., 2018). The people are not been provided proper health care services. moreover, their values and ethics are not respected and they are considered as vulnerable from society. However, in migrants many people are suffering from mental illness. The mental illness is arisen as people remain in depression, mental disorder and many others. (Myers, Cayan, & Page, 2019) In UK there are certain issues which is prevailing. The migrants are distinguished from society. They are not provided primary care services. Along with it, migrants are not given proper employment, discriminated. Moreover, social factor is cause of vulnerability as migrant in society are not accepted. However, behaviour of other people towards migrants has also resulted in vulnerability. Due to it, migrants are suffering from mental illness disease. For example – depression, mental disorder are issues prevailing within migrants of UK (Garbutt, 2019).
The team provided support to that vulnerable person suffering from depression. Here, it was necessary to provide him social and emotional support to overcome depression. Thus, for this a health care plan was developed by identifying needs of patient. Moreover, on basis of that health care facilities were provided (Dos Santos & Teixeira, 2017). In team each one was assigned roles and they performed that in effective way. Furthermore, the patient behaviour highly reflected on how he gets depressed. There were certain theories and practices which were followed by me to support patient. For example – cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) was a practice that was used to support patient and overcome depression. The theory helps in making aware about change in behaviour or negative thinking (Thomas & et.al., 2019). Through this, it was easy for me to deal with patient easily by identifying situation. This enabled me to find out the factors that leads to negative impact or change in behaviour of person. then, took appropriate and relevant measures. Furthermore, with help of CBT it was easy for me to identify the issues. I was able to manage symptoms of illness, identify ways to deal with emotions, etc. In addition to it, I was able to understand patient behaviour and need. Then, accordingly I developed a plan and provided support to him. Alongside, the CBT gave insight to me and I observed some changes within patient (Schirmer, Velmeshev, & Tung, 2019). Then, I integrated CBT with some other treatment practice as well. Here, I used other medication and antidepressants. I also used cognitive behaviour theory through which I was identify cognitive behaviour of patient. It enabled me to find out cause or symptoms of depression. I was able to evaluate negative thinking and how patient judge. So, accordingly I identified risk that can arise and how it leads to depression. Through that, care assessment plan was formed and then needs were fulfilled.
As the patient was suffering from depression, I used my communication and inter personal skills to listen to his needs and understand behaviour (Lanter & et.al., 2017). Moreover, I interacted with him so that I was able to build a strong relation. It enabled me to gain his trust and listen to problems. Furthermore, I was able to determine what type of social and emotional support needs to be given. Apart from it, by giving sympathy to him I ensured he do not feel depressed.
It is interpreted that effective communication in nursing helps in understanding patient needs and concerns. Also, it enables in focusing on individual care services. with help of proper communication, it is easy for nurse to address issues prevailing and obtain better outcomes. in addition, patient attention is gained and their needs are fulfilled. The patient become more comfortable with nurse and are able to freely express their feelings. In this way, they feel more satisfied and their needs are fulfilled (Sonnenburg & Sonnenburg, 2019). Besides, interpersonal communication makes it easy to share views and opinions freely. For many nurses, communication is key to interact with patient. Through this, it becomes easy to provide comfort to patient and by solving problems and issues depression is overcome. Similarly, when feelings are shared with patient their behaviour is analysed (Yepes-Estrada & et.al., 2016). So, on basis of that measures are taken to handle and manage situation. It changes way of dealing with patient and resolving his problems. Furthermore, it is evaluated that CBT also plays significant role in building relationship. So, in future CBT and communication can be integrated in providing care to depressed patients. With help of it, better and effective outcomes can be attained. In this way vulnerability can be reduced within people and society (Pennell, 2020).
Discussing how it can be applied to the knowledge for developing future practices-
By developing this knowledge this will be helpful for me in future practices. I had learned that how a depressed person is to be taken care and treated properly. This is helpful for me in adopting several practices which can be further helpful for me in analyzing whether an individual is suffering from depression or not (Stanford & Bolin, 2019). By learning various skills and practices I can easily treat the individual who is suffering from the depression. This all will be further helpful for me in my social work career by the help of this knowledge I could easily treat and interact with the individual suffering from the depression and analyze easily from what type of depression they are suffering and what steps can be further taken to treat them. There are various practices and techniques used by healthcare professional for treating a depressed person, by which they can cured (Brennan, 2017). By implementing this knowledge I can interact with their patients also and let them to share their problems and status of mind with me. Thus, problem of the patient could be listened by which, so I could easily solve problem of that patient if I knew what problem they are facing from. By learning various treatment practices I could also learn that how an individual must be treated and how much time they will require to be cured. There are many cases of depression and each of the individual is facing from the different type of problem which can be cured as per the wide knowledge of this disease (Munaiah, 2019). As I had worked in treating the patient I could analyze that how much type of depression are there which an individual could face. I had also learned various practices which can be used for treating them what are their methods so further by this I can treat and cure the depressed person and further can become a social worker who will be helping individual start their new life full of joy and excitement. This could have a great hike in my future social work career (Surmeier, Obeso, & Halliday, 2017).
